Mapmovies are animations of transport information displayed in an entertaining way. They are used on websites to show all the travel alternatives to and from a location, be it an event, a building or the centre of a town. They are also used to explain complex networks of transport.

Mapmovies are based on the idea that if the information is fun and simple then it's going to be watched end-to-end including parts which normally wouldn't be watched. For example Quickmap's animated bus mapmovies have made information about buses worth considering as a travel option by giving them a positive and encouraging outlook.

printed maps using Quickmap's place mapping

Quickmap has a new way of combining transport information onto one diagrammatic map. Fresh surveys are done to identify the main places where people are travelling to and from. Then these places are linked together with bus routes, train lines, cycle ways and walking paths. This creates in a new user based picture of movement. The gathered information serves as a map-base for the graphic design of new maps.

Travel plans can benefit from the Quickmap type of surveys in the output of printed information.

A small research project conducted by Glasgow University has indicated wider travel by bus using the Quickmap designed 'MapMate' for the First Group.
