MapMovies
are graphic animations conveying travel information in entertaining and
captivating ways. They are aimed at imparting confidence by making things
appear simple. Being watched like a cartoon from start to finish, they can show
different options. A re-play will even implant these into longer term
memory.
history
Back in 2004
the production of a simple animating bus map appeared to have some engaging
qualities in an otherwise mundane publicity area. This lead to creating the
first bus MapMovie showing bus route numbers emanating from London's Victoria
Station. This approach was taken up by British Land PLC for their Regents Park
HQ to help staff know about buses and see the bus as an alternative to driving
to work by car. The key selling point was that even the directors who hadn't
used a bus in years were prepared to watch..
'We've got a
wonderful bus MapMovie which I think you might enjoy.' said Sir John Ritblat,
Chairman of British Land. Former London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, helped launch
their first MapMovie in 2005, which now cover 25 city office sites and several
shopping centres throughout the UK.
commissioning
MapMovies
are designed, developed and delivered to customer requirements. Research,
survey, design and development are an integrated part of the work. Many clients
prefer the build process with an involvement only at a few key points, hence
the management of the work is done for them. We have a keen interest in
promoting sustainable transport so the emphasis of the travel options comes as
second nature. References can happily be supplied to show our expertise in this
field. Delivery is normally made between 3 and 8 weeks depending on the number
of scenes.
planning
MapMovies
will normally fulfil planning conditions imposed on developers for the
promotion of good public transport information. We can offer a consultation
process for which we have an excellent record.
mapping
Where ever
possible we use our own mapping based on social centres. These we call
'city-places' or more technically 'node-centres'. We have a comprehensive
coverage of London, out to the M25, and Glasgow, with additional in-build
coverage of South Yorkshire, Bristol, Aberdeen, Norfolk and Leicester. In
addition we use the same mapping for our printed Quickmaps and have a mission to open up other world cities
and mega-cities with our global
initiative.
tech
MapMovies
are animated in Adobe Flash. The player files can be added to any website and
placed on any web page. They can be proportionately scaled from postage stamp
size up to filling an entire screen. Hyper-linking is possible for instance
from diagrammatic bus stops with-in the map movie to real-time information.
Most files can be simply converted into html5, the format for iPhone and iPad
using Goolge Swiffy. Conversions are available into YouTube and other video
formats. There is growing interest in using the Animated GIF format now patents
have expired.
prices
Prices start
at £1K for a basic MapMovie rising approximately by £500 per scene
up to £5K for a shopping centre MapMovie. Bus-line MapMovies are the
equivalent of two scenes. There are discounts for multiple commissions. Prices
also provide for some client and user feedback, site visits, branding,
photography and important revisions, whereas consultations with local
authorities, operators, town centre teams, public and other parties on behalf
of the client are charged at a daily rate. After a year of use there is an
annual fee for updates.
